Description:

This splendid box has been made by Alexey Chirkov from the village of Fedoskino. It shows the Smolensky Cathedral (or the Cathedral of Our Lady of Smolensk Icon) that is a part of the Novodevichy Convent ensemble. It was built at the same time when the convent was founded (1524). The monumental five-domed cathedral features the paintings of the 16th-17th centuries, rare icons of the 17th century, and a five-tiered carved icon-stand. The composition also includes the beautiful park that surrounds the cathedral, and the loving couple walking along the path. The painting wraps the whole body of the box, except its bottom. The artist has chosen a beautiful color palette for the box. It is filled with light blue and gold metal paints. Gold tones are used to paint the sky and highlight the grass; another part of the composition is painted in light blue tones. It is a very successful combination. The bottom of the composition is covered with a mixture gray and gold metal paints. Here the artist has written his name, the year of 2006, the Fedoskino lacquer miniature painting, and the title ("Moscow. The Smolensky Cathedral"). The box's interior is traditionally red.
