Description:

his splendid traditional Palekh box is a creation of Alexey Kochupalov. This artist has won many awards for his contribution to the Russian lacquer art. He is the Merited Artist of USSR (1974), the People's Artist of USSR (1985), the Lenin Komsomol Prize Laureate (1970), and the Member of Artist's Union since 1966. His works are exhibited in the State Museum of Palekh Art, the State Russian Museum, the Ivanovo Region Art Museum, the Art Fund of the Russian Federation, the Plyos State History, Architecture and Art Museum-Preserve, the All Russia Pushkin's Museum (St.-Petersburg), the Central Museum of Revolution and some others.
The box features the main characters of the Pushkin's "Tale of Sleeping Princess and Seven Bogatyrs". In the middle of the composition the artist depicts seven bogatyrs; each of them at this moment proposes marriage to the Sleeping Princess. From the left of this scene we can see Prince Yelisey asking the Moon where he can find his beloved Princess, and the Queen's servant who has come to the house of seven bogatyrs to kill the Princess with a poisoned apple.
The composition is framed with the original and nice pattern painted in gold and aluminum. The similar pattern but of a bigger size can be found wrapping around the box's sides.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on four rounded feet. Signed with the name of the artist, the year of 2005 and the village of Palekh.
