This marvelous box has been made by Sergey Rogatov from the village of Fedoskino. His work is a complex combination of creative connections, concise and considerable. Experience is the everlasting ingredient in this soup of artistic organization. The audience quickly becomes participant while in the immediate view of one of this master's presentations. A composition like this is a multi-featured accomplishment, a look into the mind of the artist. Everyone sees something different while observing and interpreting the work of various artists. And that is the most beautiful thing of all, these directions being endless. The box shows a lad driving in the carriage pulled by the steed and trying to escape from robbers. This is a usual scene for Russia in Middle Ages. Many serfs tired from hard, monotonous work ran away from their owners and hid in the forest. Then they gathered into groups, organized bands and robbed people who went through the forest. Blue and gray tones are used to create the atmosphere of a forthcoming night, and red tones are used to paint the sunset. The scene is framed with a gold line. On the edges of the lid covered with gray paints one can notice an original design composed of human skulls painted in blue oils. There is a small floral pattern on the front interior side of the lid. The sides of the box are decorated with light and bright blue tartan patterns. The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to complete the exterior of the piece while a crisp red lacquer completes the interior of the box. The lid is hinged from the top of the composition and the box rests on a flat bottom. The work is signed and dated (2005) by the master.
