Description:
Palekh artist Kornilova has done a wonderful job of incorporating the inherent absurdity of Lewis Carroll's tale into the beautiful scenes on this five-sided casket. Starting on the lid, the left side shows how Alice starts down the strange road to Wonderland, and preluding her adventures is a glimpse of the hookah-smoking caterpillar. Other familiar characters are depicted around the sides of the piece, including Humpty Dumpty, the Mad Hatter and the March Hare. Kornilova paints in a modernized style of the Palekh school, allowing her to compositions to be brighter and more complex. Lovely gold and silver filigree decorates the edges and lid of the box for a perfect finishing touch. Chest made from papier-mache, signed and dated byartist.
