Description:
This brilliant work has been created by the outstanding Palekh artist A. Blokhin. It is painted in the traditional Palekh style, but shows the subject rather atypical for this school of lacquer miniature painting. A traveler sits inside the basket of the big balloon, flying over different lands, towns, forests and seas. The composition is painted in blue tones most suitable for depiction of this scene as it mainly shows the sky and the sea. The oval shape of the box is also fit for this scene because the balloon is round shaped as well as the Earth. The scene is skillfully detailed with gold and aluminum paints.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The box's sides are decorated with beautiful floral patterns painted in gold and aluminum. The box isn't hinged and rests on four legs. It is signed with the artist's name, the year of 2004, and the village of Palekh.
