Skripunov Gennady Venediktovich - lacquer miniature artist. Born on September 10, 1923 in the village of Boguslavskoe, Primorsk region. Finished the school in Kolpashevsk. Participated in Word War II, served in Soviet Army (1941-1949). Studied at the Moscow artistic-industrial school named after M.I. Kalinin. Worked at the Fedoskino factory of miniature art (1953-1983), began exhibiting in 1955. Member of Union of Artists of Russia since 1967. Skripunov's works are exhibited in the central museums of Russia.

The following information is taken from the G. Skripunov's personal catalogue (Aksenova G.A. "Gennady Skripunov. Fedoskino miniature. Water-color"):

Life and creative work of Gennady Skripunov inseparably linked with the village of Fedoskino, where the nature itself arouses inspiration. It is a place of unique beauty with its coniferous forest, birch groves, meadows and hills, ravines and the bend of the river Ucha. Fedoskino is one of the most poetic and astonishing places situated near Moscow. Not without reason the art of lacquered miniature was born here and for nearly two hundred years amazes the world with its goods made from paper-mache: boxes, snuff-boxes, pencil-cases, match-boxes, panels.

Many distinctive artists work in Fedoskino, and one of them is, undoubtedly, Gennady Skripunov.

Miniature... What can be shown on its small surface? But look attentively at the works of the craftsman. You will see landscapes, the history of Russia, the subjects, based on bylinas (Russian epics) and legends. The drawing is small, but it takes a lot of patience and love to show how revives and begins to breath our native Russian forest, how begins to palpitate the wings of a bird, which tries to fly up over the meadow, and a young beauty will give you her tender look.

But the drawing itself - is the final part of the work. Before it is necessary to prepare the box for the decoration. First of all the surface of the lid is covered with aluminum powder and dried and then the artist draws an outline. In the places, where it is necessary to strengthen the brightness with the help of the fine brush they put the pieces of silver or gold leaf, and to intensify the effect they cut in the thin plates of mother-of-pearl. After it the artist makes an underpainting using transparent colors decorating gold and mother-of-pearl and covering with varnish, further on more carefully and in details varnishing every layer. The use of glazes gives depth and visual plasticity and adds special attractiveness to the miniature. After finishing the painting, the box is vanished and polished.

And finally we have the hand-made miracle. This is the only name you will find for the miniatures, created by Gennady Skripunov. Through the colors the silver and gold is visible, the patches of light are on the surface of the box. It seems to be the ordinary Russian forest...but transformed by the artist it becomes a mysterious forest from a fairy tale shining with pearls and with something hidden in black varnish. But side by side with the stylized trees and slopes you will see quite realistic and well-known lakes and rivers, buildings of modern and ancient Russian architecture. Depending on the complexity of the drawing or the subject it may take several hours or one month (or even two sometimes) to fulfill a piece.

But the artist works not only with miniatures. What a wonder his watercolors - lyrical, transparent, filled with aroma of the Earth. "Humble beauty" of the Russian nature - his favorite theme.

He spends a lot of time on the studies perfecting himself and memorizing the nature combinations of the colors. Gennady Skripunov travels a lot. He traveled all over Russia - the North, ancient Novgorod, Pskov, Rostov..., he was on the banks of the rivers Don and Volga. He perfectly knows Middle Asia, Crimea, the Caucasus, Baltic towns. And from every new place he brings studies, which help him in working out the themes of the next watercolor or miniature.

You will never forget the meeting with Gennady Skripunov - wonderful miniaturist and landscape painter.
