Ivan Golyshev was a painter born to a serf peasant family in Mstera in 1838. He attended the Moscow Stroganov Art School before taking an apprenticeship in a Moscow lithographic workshop. In 1858, he returned to Mstera and set up a lithographic workshop studio.
Golyshev was accomplished in other areas of interest beyond painting and lithography. He explored the native land as a member of the Provincial Statistical Committee. He was a member of other various scientific societies of Russia as well. He wrote more than 500 articles of archeology, ethnography, and icon-painting. He also published a number of historical documents. He even financed edition of 10 albums on archeology and ancient Russian monuments.
