This cherished and well known artist was born and raised in Mstera, and currently resides there to this day. After graduating from the Mstera Art School in 1955, Sosin began his career at the "Proletarian Art" Factory (1958-1959). He has participated in major exhibits since 1968, and became a member of Union of Artists of USSR in 1974.
Sosin built a well established career as a Mstera lacquer box artist that has won him many state awards and honors, as well as a place on the wall of leading artists in the office of the Leading Artist at the Mstera Factory. In addition, Sosin's name is mentioned in almost every art book on Mstera. Among Sosin's most honored works is a series of lacquer boxes inspired from a trip to Yesentuki, a mineral water resort. It was there that the artist's labor union sent him to recover from an illness. This alone tells us how well he is revered and appreciated.
Peotr Ilych Sosin works freely and imaginatively within the Mstiora traditions. His painting is fresh, expressive and metaphorical. Peotr Ilych possesses a keen power of observation and an alert and precise eye. His ability to note what is characteristic and essential can be seen in his compositions on present-day themes, representing urban and rural everyday life, spring ploughing and autumn harvesting on collective farms, recreation and holidays. The figures of his characters are life-like, their gestures and movements are easy and natural. Sosin is fond of color contrasts, and likes to juxtapose red, blue and orange, alternating them rhythmically. As a rule, there are many narrative motifs in his miniatures, but they are far from being mere illustrations.
Sosin's work has been most influenced by his teacher, the late B.N. Lyubomudrov. Sosin characterizes his style as "Novgorod". Influenced by the famous Kholuy artist Klykov, his manner of painting adheres strictly to traditional iconography. It is important to note that he never makes copies of his work, so collectors know that they are getting a one of a kind piece from this artist.
Also, as is traditional for most lacquer box artists, Sosin only paints during day light hours. This practice protects the artists' eyes and as proof positive, Sosin points out that at age 63, he is only now required to wear glasses. Pyotr Ilych Sosin is a well-established Mstera artist. Several of his works were purchased by State Museums to be preserved for generations to come. In his free time, Sosin enjoys going mushroom picking, working in the garden, and taking walks with his grandson in the forest. He especially loves to watch television. Pyotr Sosin wishes for his collectors, "Mutual understanding."
