Vasily Bureev (or Bureyev) was born in January 1898 in the village of Svergino in the Vladimir Region of Russia. He died there in 1940. Bureev studied at the studios of the Committee of Trusteeship of Russian Icon Painting (1910); his teacher was I.M. Bakanov. Bureev was a member of the Artel of Ancient Painting since 1930.
The themes of his works included history, genre scenes, revolutionary subjects ("Barge-Haulers", "The Flight of Pugachov", and "Beyond the Outskirts of the Village"). He exhibited since 1937, and his works are now held in the State Museum of Palekh Art, the Museum of Folk Art, the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum, the Pushkin State Museum in Moscow, and the Central Museum of the Armed Forces.
