Ivan Dorofeev was born in 1902 in the village of Palekh, where he lived until his death in 1969. He first studied at the Committee of Trusteeship of Russian Icon Painting (1913-1917). He later became a member of the Artel of Ancient Painting in 1929, where his teacher was V.V. Kotukhin.
Themes of his works involved literature, revolutionary and contemporary subjects, and genre scenes. Titles included "Annushka", "The Caucasian Captive", "When I Served as a Post Coachman", "The Tiny Man", "On the Swings", "Pioneers", "Partisans Sitting by the Bonfire", and "The Reading of Newspapers". Dorofeev exhibited since 1933, and his works are now held in the State Museum of Palekh, and the All-Russia Museum of Decorative and Applied Art.
