Oleg Dukhanin (1957 -)
graduated from the Palekh Art College in 1980 with honours.
A passion for drawing manifested itself during his childhood;
attended painting classes in his native Tver; felt the calling
to become an artist, on the advice of his uncle — a graduate
from the Palekh Art College — went to Palekh and entered the
College in 1974; in his second year, called up to do military service;
two years later, continued his course and successfully completed it.
His first pieces showed him that he had not yet acquired all the
knowledge he required and how much experience or rather the lack of it
means. To fill in the holes in his training, he began to teach himself.
For some five years, he imitated the "old men" turning from one to
another. He was searching for his own hand within the traditional Palekh
style. Adopting widely-used subjects such as "Lukomorye", "Dobrynya",
"The Golden Cockerel" and "Ruslan and Ludmila", he tried to present them
in his own way. Difficulties, of course, arose. When dissatisfied,
he could simply clean off what he had painted and begin the search
afresh. Now this is seldom necessary; the gaining of experience has
yielded results. His wife is also an artist; they met at the College.
