Ivan Ivanovich Golikov, Honorable artist of Russia, and founder of the Palekh Art School, came from a family of icon-painters. He was born in 1886 in Moscow and died in 1937 in Palekh. At the age of ten, Golikov studied at the workshop of P.M. Safonov (1897-1900). The artist continued his education at the Art School of Baron A.L. Shtiglits. Then he was engaged in icon painting at workshops in Moscow and St. Petersburg and painted icons in churches.
1907-1911 - the artist served in the armed forces.
1911-1914 - worked at the workshop of Safonov.
1914-1917 - participated at the 1st World War.
1918-1919 - worked in the town of Shuya.
After the Great October Revolution Golikov worked at the theatres of Shuya, Kineshma, Ivanovo-Voznesensk, Kostroma (sceneries of performances by Ostrovsky "Forest", "Thunderstorm", "Snowmaiden" and performances by Molier "Doctor against his will").
In 1924 Golikov founded the Artel of ancient art. He was also occupied with porcelain painting, monumental painting, enamel, and book illustrations. Golikov worked on a variety of themes: folklore, literature, scenes of modern life, the Great October Revolution, battles, troika, hunting ("Adam in paradise", "Demons", "Battle", "Boris Godunov", "Walk in forest", "Accordion player", "State Emblem of USSR", "Uncle Yakov", "Stubble", "Beasts", "Draughts playing", "Roundabout", "Pancake week", "Napoleon", "Ornamental patterns", "Cocks", "Fire", "Word about the Igor's regiment", "The tale about fisherman and fish", "Stepan Razin", "Romeo and Juliet", "Troika of red steeds", "Round dance").
The artist participated in different exhibitions since 1923. Works by Golikov are exhibited in various museums such as the State Museum of Palekh Art, the Museum of Folk Art, the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the Gorkiy Museum, the State Art Museum in Novgorod, the Region Viatsky Museum, the Pushkin All-Russia Museum, the State Art Museum of Byelorussia, the Irkutsky Region Museum, the Yaroslavsky Historical Architectural and Art Museum, the Ivanov Region Art Museum, the All-Russia Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art and in the State Historical and Art Museum-Preserve (Sergiev Posad).
