Kotukhin Alexander Vasilievich (1886-1961)

Kotukhin Alexander Vasilievich was born in the village of Palekh, Vladimir Guberniya, on August 22, 1886, died there on May 21, 1961.
Merited Artist of the RSFSR (1935), People’s Artist of the RSFSR (1956).
Studied at N.M. Safonov’s studio (1896-1901). Worked in the Belousovs’ workshop under D.I. Salapin since 1902, and between 1909 and 1914 in Moscow, in the studio of A.A. Glazunov. Studied in the private school of A.P. Bolshakov in Moscow in 1915, and then under the artist I.I. Rerberg.
An Artist made wall painting, and worked on the restoration of frescoes (in the Chudov Monastery, in the Savinsky Monastery of Zvenigorod, etc.) Was one of the founders of the Ancient Painting Guild on Dec. 4-5, 1924; its first chairman, 1924-1926.
Taught at the Palekh Art School in 1943-1960. Practiced monumental painting (wall painting of the Leningrad, Yaroslavl and Ivanovo Young Pioneers’ Palaces and the Saratov Young Viewer’s Theater, restoration of the outside frescoes of the Moscow Kremlin Cathedral of the Assumption), porcelain painting and book illustration (the folk legend Dyuk Stepanovich, 1936).
Taught at a vocational technical school, technical art college and art school (1930-1960).
Began exhibiting in 1923.
Works are exhibited in: the State Museum of Palekh Art, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the Folk Art Museum, the All-Russia Museum of Decorative, Applied and Folk Art, the State Historical and Art Museum-Preserve (Sergiyev Posad), the Ivanovo Region Art Museum, Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum.
Themes of his works: folklore, literature, genre scenes.
