Alexey Victorovich Kovalev (or Kovalyov as it is sometimes written) was born in the village of Glushitsy in Vladimir Region in 1915. In 1935 Alexey entered the Palekh Art School. After his graduation, he was employed by the Palekh Partnership in 1947. Alexey Victorovich became a teacher at the Palekh Art School in 1965. Kovalev was admitted to the Union of Artists in 1947.
The subject matters of artist's work are folklore, literature, and scenes from contemporary life. Titles of his best pieces include "Stone Flower", "Collective Farm Chastushkas", "Lenin at the Bottling", "Peace be with the World", and "Chapaev". The painter's miniatures have been featured in exhibitions since 1948, and some of them can be currently seen in the State Museum of Palekh Art, State Russian Museum, Ivanovo Regional Art Musuem, Museum of Folk Art, and Russian A.S. Pushkin Museum.
