Born in 1947 in Zatkhlino, Nikolay studied at the Palekh Art School from 1963-1968. Following his graduation, he immediately began working at the Palekh Art Workshop. The themes of his works are mostly folklore and landscapes (titles include "Cactuses", "Hay-making Time", "Russian Bogatyrs", and "The Legend of Olga").
Nikolay Lopatin has been exhibiting since 1969. Works by the artist are now within the collections of the State Museum of Palekh Art, the Ivanovo Regional Art Museum, the All-Russia Museum of Decorative and Applied Art, the Art Foundation of Russia, the Museum of Culture and Technology of the Russian Federation, and the Plyos State Historico-Architectural and Art Museum-Preserve.
