Ivan Petrovich Vakurov - Merited Art Worker (1935), People's artist of the RSFSR (1956). Vakurov was born in the village of Palekh on January 21, 1885 and died there on April 20, 1968. He was brought up as an icon painter. He studied under N.M. Safonov at his Icon Workshops in Palekh (1893-1899), for whom he worked until 1915 before starting work under M.P. Parilov (1915-1919), where he did the murals at the Svyatoozersky Monastery (Vladimir Guberniya). During this period Vakurov learned how to restore icons, murals and frescoes. He worked in various churches in Novgorod, Pskov and Moscow.
Later, Vakurov worked at the Workshop of A.D. Salautin (doing the large iconostasis for the Tsaritsyno Cathedral) before moving to Moscow to the studios of Vashurov where he worked from 1919 to 1922. Vakurov learned the skill of painting paper mache items in 1923. Ivan Petrovich worked on a variety of themes: folklore, literature, history, genre scenes, hunting scenes and battles ("Battle with Dragon", "The Song of the Stormy Petrel", "Prince Gvidon", "Blind-man's-buff", "Ivanov day", "Wood-goblin", "Forest Song", "Pool", "M.Y. Lermontov", "Yaroslavna's Crying", "Ruslan and Ludmila", "Gypsy").
He joined the Artel of Ancient Art in Palekh in 1926. In addition to lacquer miniature, Vakurov did murals (the Chess room at the Young Pioneer Palace in Ivanovo, 1938), illustrated "The Song of the Stormy Petrel" by M.S. Gorky, 1936; A.S. Pushkin's "Tale of the Golden Cockerel", 1937. He did porcelain painting, book illustrations, drawings for textiles in 1920-1930. Vakurov was a teacher at the Palekh Art School and various art classes from 1928 through 1968. Began exhibiting in 1923.

Pushkin (St. Petersburg), the Kalinin Museum, the Kiev Art Museum in Ukraine and etc..
